Project Description
The CMU (Concrete Masonry Unit) Buildings project in Nawa District, Afghanistan, represents a benchmark in modern construction carried out under challenging environmental and logistical conditions. Executed by Imperial Capilano GP Inc. (Capilan Group's General Contracting & Logistics Arm) for the Norwegian military. The project involved the planning and execution of concrete CMU structures designed to support military operations while withstanding the harsh climatic realities of the region.
Concrete Masonry Units were selected as the primary structural system due to their strength and performance in high-stress environments. These CMUs were manufactured using state-of-the-art cement and concrete formulations that provided enhanced strength, and resistance to environmental degradation. Advanced concrete mixes were specifically engineered to perform under extreme temperature fluctuations, reducing the risk of cracking & moisture.
In addition to high-performance concrete, engineered bricks and materials were incorporated into the building envelope to improve thermal protection. These materials were chosen for their thermal mass properties, allowing the structures to absorb heat during the day and release it gradually during cooler periods.

Live progress tracking and digital reporting platforms allowed project managers and client representatives to monitor construction activities as they occurred. This level of transparency enabled faster decision-making, early identification of potential issues, and consistent alignment with project milestones despite the remote location of the site.
The successful delivery of the CMU Buildings in Nawa District reflects the Capilan's ability to execute advanced construction projects in demanding environments.
